It’s so easy to love certain foods, a book, a Hollywood star, a sport, or an experience. In fact, anything that you enjoy you can love, right!?

So, what about your eyes?

They enhance your life, make sense of the world, show your beauty, give you intense moments of joy and they are remarkable organs that we often take for granted.

Okay, it may sound odd to say, “I’m in love with my eyes”, but loving them is how we treat them, take care of them, protect them and appreciate them!

At Vision Works, our motto has always been #loveyoureyes, so, coincidentally, this year’s World Sight Day (14th October 21) theme is, you guessed it, Love Your Eyes!

To mark this date, let’s highlight some important ways to take care of your most valuable assets!

Take the
necessary steps

Have regular eye check-ups.

Vision problems and diseases can occur at any time in our lives.
That’s why it’s vital to be aware of any changes in your vision and to address any issues early on.

Healthy food. Healthy eyes.

Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and eating fish like salmon, high in omega-3 fatty acids, is key to keeping your eyes healthy.

Watch your waist.

Being overweight may increase your risk of developing diabetes and lead to eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma. (https://www.healthline.com/health/glaucoma-and-diabetes#bottom-line)

Exercise makes
the difference

Exercise makes
the difference

Keeping active is vital because it can reduce the risk of developing conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol that negatively affect your eyes.

Up in smoke

Smoking is a bad habit that can increase the risk of eye disease and seriously damage the optic nerve. Quit today!

Shade them

Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that block out both UV-A and UV-B radiation from the sun. Too much sun exposure could also lead to cataracts later.

Step away from the screen

If you spend hours staring at your mobile or computer screen, you are straining your eyes.
Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look far away about 20 feet (6 metres) for 20 seconds.

Family tree

Many eye diseases are inheritable, so know your family history to gauge potential risk factors.

Loving your eyes must be unconditional!

We encourage you to have regular eye check-ups at your nearest Vision Works Optometrist and to speak to your GP about making any necessary life adjustments.

Let’s make World Sight Day, 14th October, a celebration of the miracle of eyesight.
