Eye care tips for kids

ONE OF THE BEST INVESTMENTS YOU CAN MAKE FOR YOUR KIDS IS MAKING SURE THEY HAVE A HEALTHY PAIR OF EYES.  HERE’S HOW TO SAY

TICK TOCK

Reduce time on hand-held electronic devices, phones, all computer-related activities and watching TV

The young, growing eye is not mature enough to handle the continuous focusing required to play games for hours – so set a time limit for these

Ensure that your child takes a break after 30 to 40 minutes of reading, writing and computer work

To rest his or her eyes, encourage your child to look at distant objects for three to five minutes during these breaks

WILD CHILD

Have fun outside.  Increase time spent on outdoor activities like ball games, dog walks to the park or time at the beach

Play bat and ball or throw beanbags around to improve hand-eye coordination

EYE EYE CAPTAIN

Ensure there is adequate lighting from a study lamp when your kids are studying. Overhead lighting is usually not enough

When reading, kids should hold the book about 30 to 40cm away from their eyes

Make sure when using the computer, that the screen is about 50cm away from their eyes

Eating a balanced diet, with lots of yellow, orange and green fruit and veg with reduced amounts of sugar, will enhance the longevity and development of your child’s eyes

Kids should have at least eight hours of sleep each night to rest growing young bodies and eyes
